The photo on our cover for our Per Brink Special Issue shows a juvenile moor frog (Rana arvalis) in the forest floor in Central Sweden, May 2016.
This species is one of the most abundant and widespread amphibians in Scandinavia, even tolerating freezing during the winter.
Larvae from amphibians living in seasonal environments need to balance the pressures of growing fast, and metamorphose before conditions in the pond deteriorate later in the year, and maintaining other functional responses, such as optimal immune levels.
