INTERVIEW QUESTIONS:

1. What's your main research focus at the moment?

The role of soil microbes and the wider soil community in sequestering carbon to mineral soil particles

2. Can you describe your research career? Where, what, when?

Msc Ecology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam 2003-2005, PhD Plant invasions and belowground interactions at Wageningen University 2005-2011, post-doc soil biodiversity and functioning (EcoFINDERS) NIOO-KNAW 2011-2015, post-doc Top-down or bottom-up regulation of soil restoration at the University of Amsterdam 2015-2019, and since 2019 assistant professor soil carbon cycling at University of Amsterdam.

3. How come that you became a scientist in ecology?

During my studies at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam I followed a course on community ecology where we did several practical experiments with woodlice, collembola-spider predator-prey handling as well as following the sequence of fungi growing during the decomposition of a rabbit dropping. It all of a sudden clicked in my head: I wanted to become a scientist in soil ecology.

4. What do you do when you're not working?

Being a mom for my 3 children (10, 13, 15 yrs old), playing viola in an orchestra, running, yoga & hiking
