What's your main research focus at the moment?
My research mainly focuses on soil ecology and global change. I am using field manipulative experiments to investigate how global change affects soil carbon and nitrogen cycling in various ecosystems, such as grasslands, forests, and peatlands. I am also applying data mining and meta-analysis approaches to synthesize regional and global patterns of ecosystem functioning and its responses to global change.
Can you describe your research career?
I started my Master (2007-2010) at Beijing Forestry University and then studied PhD in forest ecology (2010-2013) exploring how soil carbon dynamics respond to simulated nitrogen deposition in temperate forests. From 2016 to 2019, I worked at Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in China and Northern Arizona University (NAU) in USA as a postdoc. During the postdoc study in Yiqi Luo’s lab in NAU, I expanded my research to integrate data with modeling in soil systems. Since 2019 I started as an assistant professor at CAS where I used field manipulative experiments, experimental networks, and data synthesis to better understand the impacts of global change on soil ecosystems.
How come that you became a scientist in ecology?
I really have interests in ecology in my PhD, especially during the time at Rothamsted Research, UK in 2012 based on a PhD exchange project. There I got a systematic training, including experimental design, field sampling, data analysis, and scientific writing. I was close to many scientists and expanded my skills, such as greenhouse gas sampling, flux measurements, and soil incubation. At that time, I actually realized what is the science of ecology and how it can service for human beings.
What do you do when you're not working?
I enjoy playing basketball during my free time. I also love hiking, exploring new trails, and enjoying nature. These activities help me maintain a healthy work-life balance while allowing me to connect with friends and family.
