The cover for the May Issue is drawn by Robert Fischer, one of the authors to the paper "Importance of mixotrophic bacterivory can be predicted by light and loss rates".

Robert describes it like this: The watercolor painting represents a free interpretation of an ochromonad-type flagellate (Chrysophyceae). In an abstract way, it refers to the variable - in poetic words “colorful” - nature of the nutrition of mixotrophs, but also to the importance of light for bacterivory in mixotrophs. Even though the splashed colors were intended simply as an artistic style, one could interpret this as the lysis of the cell, which could be related to loss rates, the second predictor after light for the importance of mixotrophic bacterivores.
