Oikos is changing guards

Submitted by editor on 26 August 2024.

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is with a mix of excitement and nostalgia that we announce changes in our senior editorial team at Oikos. Our esteemed Captain and Editor-in-Chief for the past 12 years, Dries Bonte, will be embarking on new academic endeavors. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dries for his personal and professional dedication to Oikos. As he concludes his final editorial duties, Dries will assist in ensuring a smooth transition to our new senior editorial team. We also wish to express our profound appreciation to Gerlinde De Deyn, who has served Oikos as our Deputy Editor-in-Chief for nearly a decade. Gerlinde is also moving on to new academic pursuits, and we thank her for her years of invaluable service. Let’s extend again our thanks to both Dries and Gerlinde.

About six months ago, we initiated the transition of our senior editorial team. Recognizing the significant growth in both the field of ecology and Oikos over the past decade, we decided to implement a new structure to manage the journal's day-to-day operations and long-term strategies. After extensive collaboration with the Nordic Society Oikos, we concluded that the senior roles should be undertaken by co-Editors-in-Chief, each bringing their expertise and passion for different components of journal development.

The responsibilities of our co-Editors-in-Chief are extensive, encompassing daily administrative tasks, curating and developing journal content, strategic development of the journal, supporting and communicating with the members of the editorial board, attending multiple conferences to promote the journal, and maintaining communication with authors and readers. We are delighted to introduce our two co-Editors-in-Chief: Paulo Guimarães (Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil) and Pedro Peres-Neto (Concordia University, Canada). Most of you are familiar with Pedro as he has been serving as our Strategic and Deputy Editor-in-Chief for the past 7 years and Paulo previously served as a Subject Editor of Oikos. Both Paulo and Pedro bring a wealth of experience with the editorial system as they have served on the board of multiple journals.

This familiarity will ensure a seamless transition and continued excellence in our journal's stewardship.

Thank you all for your continued support of Oikos as we embark on this exciting new chapter.

The Oikos team
